Madison County Record : Opinion News About Us Opinion A letter from the mayor (Updated: Friday, April 6, 2007 10:12 AM CDT) To the Editor:I am writing to you to call your attention to a matter of serious concern both to the City of Madison and the State of Alabama.On March 10, Senator Lowell Barron from Fyffe County began required advertising for two local bills that would de-annex 263 acres (230 acres in one bill and 33 acres in the other) of prime commercial property from the City of Madison.

This property has been in Madison for over 40 years, and recently, the City has been negotiating with a nationwide development company for a major commercial development there.

I strongly urge the Legislature to reject these bills for three principal reasons:First, de-annexation of this property would set a very bad precedent statewide.

It would mean that cities like Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills might find their property involuntarily de-annexed and then annexed into Birmingham, or cities like Pritchard find their property involuntarily de-annexed and annexed into Mobile.

The situation could quickly become so chaotic as to destabilize the finances of many smaller cities, including their ability to pay their bondholders.

Because of the instabilities that could be created in cities’ tax bases, approval of this de-annexation and the precedent it would create could cause bond rating agencies to ...

...According to police, Harclerode allegedly acknowledged being alone in his camper with the boy.

He also allegedly told police he had touched the boy on the back and in other non-sexual areas.Harclerode is currently incarcerated in Columbia County prison on $75,000 bail.
