Unwin said Gateway currently has a pool of about 18,500 active study participants from around the St.

Louis area, and last month alone it accepted 750 new participants.

The study clinics feature televisions, VCRs, pool tables, phones and reading materials for participants' use.

Visitors are allowed during certain hours.

The company's Web site says patient side effects are few during most drug trials, but nurses, doctors and emergency medical technicians are on site at all times to handle any complications.

All aspects of Gateway's work are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, Unwin said.

He said Shipley started Gateway in 1987 and had first-year revenue of $6,400.

Shipley has a medical research background and worked for the FDA before founding Gateway.

The mechanisms haven't changed in more than 50 years of health education aimed at helping people conquer obesity: Reduce caloric intake and increase caloric output.In other words, eat less and exercise more.Agreed: Those five words represent the biggest single public-health challenge facing the developed world, and will continue as such for the next couple of centuries.

That is, until someone invents "foods" that nourish the body without contributing any calories to the metabolic equation.Until that occurs, I feel strongly that an appropriate interim strategy might be for dietary, health-care and food-industry authorities to step up and take on the ridiculous veggie proposition that meat eating is a recipe for failure in the bedroom.
