Gateway Medical's trials boosting revenue, staff... Gateway covers the screening costs. Unwin said Gateway currently has a pool of about 18,500 active study participants from around the St. Louis area, and last month alone it accepted 750 new participants. The study clinics feature televisions, VCRs, pool tables, phones and reading materials for participants' use. Visitors are allowed during certain hours. The company's Web site says patient side effects are few during most drug trials, but nurses, doctors and emergency medical technicians are on site at all times to handle any complications. All aspects of Gateway's work are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, Unwin said. He said Shipley started Gateway in 1987 and had first-year revenue of $6,400. Shipley has a medical research background and worked for the FDA before founding Gateway. jjohnson@bizjournals.com Contact the Editor Need Assistance?
