Eli Lilly sales up despite 39% earnings drop

... Lilly Chief Financial Officer Derica Rice said the amount the company spends on research and development, as a percentage of sales, is still among the highest percentages in the industry.

"We still think that is the life blood of this company, and we don't see walking away from that," he said.

Lilly now expects full-year adjusted earnings per share to fall within the range of $3.30 to $3.40 per share, an increase from the $3.25 to $3.35 range it had projected.

"We are delivering on our priorities with solid financial performance in the first quarter," Rice told analysts during the conference call.
