Earnings projections for the first three months of the year were also ratcheted lower to between five and seven cents a share, less than half the average Wall Street estimate of 14 cents a share, according to Reuters Research.

"This quarter, vendor quality issues, combined with performance shortfalls in our internal manufacturing and demand planning efforts, resulted in an inability to consistently meet demand for several key product lines," said Emerson, who noted that without those challenges, the company would have been able to report revenue within its initial range of guidance.

For the full year, American Medical now expects revenue to fall between $475 and $500 million.

That's well below its previous range of $490 to $515 million, which the company reiterated as recently as Feb.
