The round of hiring shows that GTx wants to transform itself from a small company spun off from research at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center to a firm that actually produces drugs.

In some ways, employees who join GTx are taking a risk.

Many biotech companies fail, and GTx, which incorporated in 1997, is losing millions of dollars as it tries to bring its drugs to market.

But Wall Street analysts have been upbeat about the firm's chances of surviving the regulatory process, and its stock closed at $20.71 Tuesday, up 20 percent compared to the start of the year.

The firm's success in recruiting highly skilled workers suggests that they also have faith in its ideas.

plans to leave his home in Hillsboro, N.J., and move his family to Memphis as he takes a position of chief medical officer at GTx.

He'll leave a lot behind - Morton is a professor of surgery and chief of the division of urology at New Jersey's Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
